My Reflection for PIDP 3240

As everybody has to pass the stage of a beginner in every educational course, I was very excited to start the media course. I was optimistic and energized for my first online learning experience. It was a great opportunity for me to read J. A. Bowen’s “Teaching Naked” for the first time. When I was reading those chapters, I got to know more details about new technology and its effectiveness in teaching and learning. Once, I started assignments I had some anxiety on whether I was on the right track. I appreciate my instructor for the great support and the encouragement to step forward.

Forum posting was a fascinating learning experience for me. I wanted to participate and contribute as much as possible in order to improve my technical skills and learning. I read all the postings and was amazed by some of the technological methods which I had never heard of. I did a lot of research and tried my best to provide regular contribution. It was a great opportunity to interact with the classmates and share ideas.

Creating my very first blog was another valuable experience in the PIDP program. I learnt about importance of Copyright, Creative Commons and Public Domain. I improved my blog by figuring out technical issues, and it was a fantastic opportunity to advance my writing skills. Sometimes, I was really tired after work, still managed to provide regular contribution to the blog with enthusiasm to enhance my learning.

Finally I came across the end of these 8 weeks. I picked up an apple of PIDP 3240 from the PIDP apple tree.

The taste of the delicious apple will benefit my students and me in the future.

In the modern world, technology and media is a great platform that nursing educators can use to help students gain knowledge and improve their skills in order to become competent in nursing.

Technology provides alternate options to engage students with a variety of learning styles. Nurse educators can successfully integrate media and technology into nursing.

Nurse Educator role and responsibilities

A nurse educator is a professional nurse who has advanced education in clinical and educational training with experience in health care speciality.

The nurse educator’s main responsibility is to prepare students for entry into practice by updating their knowledge and skills. The nurse educator should create an environment for active and positive learning for nursing students.

The nurse educator participates in:

  • Designing orientation
  • Developing new courses and curricula
  • Assessing learning needs by identifying strengths & weaknesses
  • Evaluating by providing constructive & effective feedback
  • Selecting & using correct instructional methods for the audience
  • Teaching evaluation programs including self-evaluatio

I chose this role because it lets me share my stories and experiences with the students for the benefit of their learning. Most importantly this is a rewarding teaching experience because it ensures that students become well-educated in the health care field.

Khan Academy

The first time I heard about Khan Academy was in the PIDP course. I was amazed by its broad spectrum free educational service for students all over the world. This non-profit organization provides micro lectures and educational tools for educators.

I can remember my PIDP classmates sharing stories about students who used Khan Academy and how they became very successful in the subject matter.

I would like to share this video by Salmon Khan, the Founder of Khan Academy, talking about “Let’s use video to reinvent education.”

Open Textbooks

The open textbooks under licensing allows students and instructors to access them for little or no cost. Most importantly instructors are able to modify or edit the content in case of error is found.

There are pros and cons of open textbooks.

 Advantages:

  • Flexibility- can use at anytime
  • Information is up to date (no need to wait for a new edition)
  • Often free or very low price
  • No need to carry heavy books
  • Learning material is interactive because of its’ multimedia component
  • Can be easily found and students anywhere in the world can access it at anytime

Disadvantages:

  • Student will need a computer, laptop or a tablet
  • Technological issues
  • Lack of interaction between students and teachers

I prefer to use open textbooks because I can use it in my own time according to the availability of my busy schedule.

Cell Phones in the classroom

Personally,  I don’t like to use cellphones in the classroom.

Even though I have a different opinion there are some advantages of using cellphones in classroom as well.

There are some educators who prefer to use cellphones in classroom for the benefit of both parties.

Teaching with E-communication

Teachers can improve students ‘learning by creating interaction and engagement via technology.  Through accessible media such as blogs ,emails and some social media, teachers can provide students with resources and pre-reading in advance.  Teacher should use e-communication according to the syllabus, being consistent, brief and transparent.  Instructors should be aware of e-communication and protect students & themselves.
